After her mother and Aunt Em left with the children, Helma looked up Lewis Dixon’s name in her phone book. The address was listed and she jotted it down on a piece of paper beside her phone: 2716 Rose Briar Lane.

It sounded vaguely familiar but Helma couldn’t place it. She flipped to the map in the front of the telephone book and looked it up. Rose Brian Lane was on the south end of Bellehaven. She used her fingers to trace the quadrants: L6.

And there it was, a short dead-end road branching off the road she’d traveled that very morning, the road that led to Danish Point.

Helma held her finger in the L6 quadrant of the map, thinking. On Sunday, while Wayne Gallant had been questioning Mary Lynn, there’d been a call from the vicinity of a murder. Wayne was a hands-on police chief, and it was very like him to have taken the call himself, especially if he believed it might be connected to Lewis Dixon’s murder. Had he confronted Lewis’s killer at Danish Point? She had to discover who’d called in the prowler complaint.

Helma changed into slacks and a pullover sweater and the comfortable shoes she wore for walking. Then she watched from her window until she saw Dean and Skip return with a load of Mary Lynn’s possessions before she left her apartment.

She met the two men, each carrying a cardboard box, on the stairs, Dean lagging behind. “You look tired,” she said sympathetically. “Is this your last load?”

“Definitely,” Skip told her.

“That’s good.”
